Microsoft shuts down Redfall developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks and more in devastating cuts at Bethesda - IGN Microsoft has shut down a number of Bethesda studios, including Redfall maker Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush and The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks, and more in devastating cuts at Bethesda, IGN can confirm.Alpha Dog Studios, maker of the Mighty Doom mobile game, will also shut down. Roundhouse Games will be absorbed by The Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online Studios. Microsoft, which is now worth more than $3 trillion, has not said how many employees will lose their jobs, but significant layoffs are inevitable. IGN has reached out to Bethesda for comment. Microsoft declined to elaborate further when contacted by IGN.In Redfall, the devastating co-op vampire game will no longer receive promised updates, as Microsoft has ended all development of the game. Microsoft said Redfall will remain online to play and will offer a "good" deal for those who bought the Hero DLC.Sign up here https://t.co/wb1R4m4emj to get details on how eligible players can get this credit. pic.twitter.com/69Os17kpQ8— Arkane Studios (@ArkaneStudios) May 7, 2024 Arkane Lyon, who works for Marvel's Blade, survives the carnage, as do Bethesda Game Studios (Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Starfield) and Machine Games (Indiana Jones and The Great Circle). Doom developer ID software is also unaffected.“This reprioritization of titles and resources means that some groups will realign with others and that some of our colleagues will leave us. In an email to staff sent by Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, Microsoft blamed the cuts on a "re-prioritization of titles and resources". The email, verified by IGN, is as follows:Today I'm sharing the changes we're making on the Bethesda and ZeniMax teams. These changes are based on prioritizing high-impact titles and further investing in Bethesda's portfolio of blockbuster games and beloved worlds you've nurtured over many decades. To double these franchises and invest to create new ones, we need to look across the business to identify the opportunities best positioned for success. This realignment of titles and resources means that some teams will realign with others and that some of our colleagues will leave us. Here are the changes taking effect: Arkane Austin – This studio will be closing with some team members joining other studios to work on projects throughout Bethesda. Arkane Austin has a history of producing impressive and innovative games, and it's a pedigree that everyone should be proud of. Redfall's previous update will be its last as we finish development of the game. The game and its servers will remain online for players to enjoy, and we will provide good deals to players who purchased the Hero DLC. Alpha Dog Studios – This studio will also be closed. We appreciate the team's creativity in bringing Doom to new players. Mighty Doom will be retiring on August 7th and we will be disabling the ability for players to make in-game purchases. Tango Gameworks – Tango Gameworks will also be shutting down. We are grateful for their contributions to Bethesda and to players around the world. Hi-Fi Rush will continue to be available to players on the platforms it is on today. Roundhouse Games – The Roundhouse Games team will join ZeniMax Online Studios (ZOS). The Roundhouse has played a key role in many of our recent game releases, and bringing them to ZOS to work on The Elder Scrolls Online will mean we can do even more to grow the world that millions of players call home. With this consolidation of the Bethesda studio teams so we can invest more deeply in our game portfolio and new IP, a small number of roles in select Bethesda publishing and corporate teams will also be eliminated. Those whose roles will be affected will be notified today and we ask that you treat your departing colleagues with respect and compassion. We will provide our full support to those affected by today's notices and through their transition, including redundancy benefits as updated by local law. These changes do not reflect the creativity and skill of the talented individuals on these teams or the risks they took to try new things. I recognize that these changes are also disruptive to the various support teams at ZeniMax and Bethesda that bring our games to market. We are making these difficult decisions to create capacity to increase investment in other parts of our portfolio and focus on our priority plays. Bethesda remains one of the mainstays of Xbox with a strong portfolio of amazing games and thriving communities. As we look to the future, there's an impressive lineup of games on the horizon. In 2024 alone we have Starfield Shattered Space, Fallout 76 Skyline Valley, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle and The Elder Scrolls Online's Golden Road. As we align our plans and resources to better prepare for success in this complex and changing industry, our teams at Arkane Lyon, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, MachineGames, ZeniMax Online Studios, and the Bethesda publishing and corporate teams will be well positioned to create new IPs, explore new game ideas and expand our existing franchises. - CheckmateMicrosoft's announcement of the cuts at Bethesda comes more than three months after the company announced plans to cut 1,900 people from its video game workforce and amid a boom for Bethesda's Fallout series following its Prime Video hit TV. The closure of Tango Gameworks comes just over a year after the release of Hi-Fi Rush, which many considered one of the best Xbox games in recent years. Tweeting In April 2023, Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft's Vice President of Xbox Games Marketing, expressed concern that Hi-Fi Rush failed to meet sales targets, calling the game "a success for us and our players across all key measurements and expectations". Greenberg continued, "We couldn't be happier with what the team at Tango Gameworks delivered with this surprise release." Hi-Fi Rush launched on PS5 as part of Microsoft's new cross-platform promotion in March.pic.twitter.com/KhhqgR902g— Tango Gameworks (@TangoGameworks) May 7, 2024 In a series of tweets, Arkane Lyon captain Dinga Bakaba hit out at the cuts, calling them "absolutely terrible". "To any executives reading this, a friendly reminder that video games are an entertainment/cultural activity industry and your business as a company is to take care of your artists/entertainers and help them create value for you," Bakaba continued."Don't throw us into gold rush stakes, don't use us as straw men for miscalculations/blind spots, don't make our work environments Darwinian jungles. You say we make you proud when we play a good game. Make us proud when times are tough We know you can, we've seen it before."At the moment, big teams are falling again before our eyes and it's a fucking knife. story to tell, their feelings to express."Inside baseball, but if I read the "immersive sim curse" from the community, especially from a fellow developer, I swear to God... Please, let's talk about the *real* challenges instead of stirring up irrational anxieties of the past."Even more inside baseball, but with a very, very wide range, as a wise and very nostalgic man said: 'Please stop.' "Layoffs are sweeping the video game industry, with a number of high-profile studios cutting staff or shutting down. In stark contrast to a year of successful video games, one of the biggest ongoing industry trends in 2023 was the prevalence of mass layoffs, and they continued into 2024. While the actual figures are hard to come by, estimates show the number of workers laid off off games last year approached or exceeded 10,000. A recent GDC survey of developers shows that a third of all game developers were affected by layoffs last year, either directly or by seeing them happen at their company.Development...Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN.
